Cozy Bookish Sundays from July: A Reading Vlog

Image
Every Sunday I TRY to dedicate the day to my books - catch up on 'me' time (which means Book Time) after usually a crazy week.  July was a BAD reading month for me.  None of the books I read overly impressed me which put me into a reading slump. I was also focusing more on dating and social life than book - bad bad Jade.  So this is a very chatty video about not only books but the world of dating through the Tinder dating app etc etc. QOTD: HAVE YOU EVER USED TINDER? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF IT??? My Links: Breezes and Birdsongs Instagram Gluten Free Insta PERSONAL Insta Twitter Blog

Book Review | Under the Sun by Lottie Moggach

Thank you to Pan Macmillan (South Africa) for sending me a Picador Proof copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Anna moved to Spain to build a life for her and her artist boyfriend, Michael. She invested every penny to her name into a beautiful Finca for them and redecorated it to be their ideal home. Michael appeared to contribute nothing.  Straight from the start her character is constantly belittled and made inferior to all those around her. While her friends and family believe she is living the dream is Spain, the reality is that her relationship is over. When he leaves with little more than a note goodbye, Anna is left alone to pick up the pieces. During a huge financial crisis, she rents out their Finca to a local business called Simn and shacks up in a tiny apartment in Marea where a bunch of expats have decided to call home. She runs a bar and carries out an affair with an older man in an attempt to boost her shattered confidence.  Anna almost instantly r...

The Roanoke Girls by Amy Engel | Book Review

Image
"Sometimes its a revelation, even to me, how much more comfortable I am with cruelty than with kindness." I received a copy of this book from Jonathan Ball Publishing in exchange for an honest review.  Amy Engel's writing is delectable - the story is extremely unsettling and makes you uncomfortable as you read but the writing and haunting plot creates an unputdownable masterpiece.  Her work is like a culinary creation - something you shouldn't enjoy such as a cricket taco or a tarantula burger from Manchester's new Brazilian inspired restaurant, Favela, featuring a creepy crawly buffet menu.  This book is just that.  It's dirty and twisted, it's creepy and dark... crawling in disturbing secrets and it's by far the most unique tale I have ever come across.  A murder mystery to the core with an underlying hint of romance that softens the edges of this fascinating 'who-dunnit' novel.  How a book with such a stunning cover can conceal such a horri...

Holy Cow: A Modern Day Dairy Tale by David Duchovny | Book Review

5/5 stars!!! This is a eminently comical book filled with wise-cracks and wit but has surprisingly and effortlessly delivered some really important messages about acceptance, culture, mutual respect and understanding.  It is a reminder that animals are not the mindless beasts purely there to serve and feed us as many of us in the human race seem to think they are.  One thing that our MC, Elsie the cow, says in this book really stood out to me. She said something along the lines of: humans shouldn't have the privilege of being called an animal because we don't deserve it. She says that she thanks every blade of grass when she's grazing in the field.  That's respect for nature at its finest and it is how many of us forget to be. While getting that point across, Duchovny doesn't do it in a preachy way. It's lighthearted and it's FUNNY.  It's a completely crazy (yet oh so very true!) globe-trotting story that requires you to leave your sense of reality behin...

Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert: A Book Review

Image
Wow wow wow! Just finished reading the absolutely incredible book, Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.  How do you actually sum up your favorite book??? How do you do it justice? I had tried to read this book a number of times when I was younger and just couldn't get into it - although I'd thoroughly enjoyed the movie.  I have no idea what took me so long to finally pick such a gem of a book up and enjoy it totally (perhaps because it starts with her being miserable about her divorce and lately I've been battling my way through my failed engagement) but I am so happy I finally did. What an inspiring piece of writing! It was fascinating to read about all of the places I have already been fortunate enough to visit like Italy and Bali.  In particular, I thoroughly enjoyed the Bali section of the book and it was mind-blowing to read about the Balinese healer Wayan Nuriasih in Ubud who I actually visited during my travels there last year. If you are ever in Bali, please pay th...
